Media release
Issued: Thursday February 24th 2005
Returning to practice is set to become easier than ever for lawyers as one of the UK's leading legal training providers, altior Consulting & Training, launches its first series of courses dedicated to returners.
The unique courses, which are the only one of their kind in the country, are aimed primarily at lawyers returning from a break from practice, either because they have taken a sabbatical, been working in management or commerce or raising their children.
"It is becoming increasingly common for solicitors to take a break from practice," said Ruth Khan, the course director and one of the tutors on the course. "Like many other lawyers, I took time out when my children were small and know many other lawyers who, for one reason or another, have decided to take a career break to pursue other ambitions, but always with a view to returning to practice at some point in the future.
"The legal world is an extremely competitive labour market and the transition of going back to practice can be difficult, especially if you are seen as being 'out of touch' with the latest developments.
"Each course has been designed with this in mind. As well as refreshing the basics and updating returners on the very latest developments, such as the new money laundering regulations, we want to give returners a new found confidence in themselves and their abilities, both as lawyers and managers.
"This is why the course covers many skills-based topics such as management, marketing, negotiating, networking and interviewing. Also delegates from the Returners Course can attend any of altior's substantive law update courses for a reduced fee, which should be an extra help.
"The course will be a great opportunity for people who are in similar situations to meet and compare experiences. It is also a useful "refresher" course for those already in practice and want to update their pervasive skills or find out more about the latest developments and hot topics effecting solicitors in practice."
The two-day courses will be held at 36 Park Street, Mayfair in London on 24 and 25 May 2005 and in at the Malmaison Hotel, Manchester on 28 and 29 June 2005.
They will be led by Ruth Khan, who was a commercial litigator and mediation specialist in practice and is now a development director and tutor for altior. The course will be taught on a primarily workshop basis to ensure that delegates gain as much one-to-one tutoring as possible.
