Pitman Training is set to open a new centre in Cardiff, offering local residents and businesses a wide range of flexible learning courses that will help satisfy the region’s growing demand for business skills training.

The centre will be owned by Mark Loosemore, who is also chief executive and majority shareholder at specialist legal training provider, altior, whose head office is also in Cardiff. Mark commented: "I am delighted to have obtained the South Wales franchise for the prestigious Pitman Training brand. It will be exciting to continue to develop altior's growing business and complement that with the Pitman Training offering. There will be excellent cross-selling opportunities for us."

The Minister for Education and Lifelong Learning and Skills Jane Davidson said: “Wales’ economic future must be based on high value-added businesses and high quality jobs. Success relies upon achieving significant increases in our work related skills particularly where there are skills shortages and gaps. Training centres which offer high quality flexible courses are vitally important in helping us to raise our skills levels. The new Pitman Training facility will be a vitally important learning base for the region”.

The Pitman Training Centre, located in a prime position opposite Cardiff Castle at 2nd Floor, Castle House, 1-7 Castle Street, will open its doors on Thursday 26th October 2006. Centre manager, Leanne Waring said: “Adult learning is extremely topical in Wales now that it is controlled by the National Assembly for Wales and not Westminster. There are great job opportunities for qualified administrative, secretarial, finance and IT staff in the region. The new centre will help to ensure that people can equip themselves with the skills they need to progress in their current job, win a promotion, or make a career change. Pitman Training offers a huge range of courses including diplomas for prospective legal and medical secretaries, executive PA’s and for overseas students, as well as individual courses covering all the Microsoft office applications, keyboard skills, shorthand, book keeping and accounting”.

The new centre offers courses to local businesses, and individuals alike. Leanne continued: “Pitman Training is unique due to the flexibility we offer our customers. Individuals can work through the courses, which are mostly computer-based, as and when they find the time, as quickly or as slowly as they are able. Local businesses can look at improving the skills of their current staff and our flexible approach means that no office needs to be short-staffed or empty while the entire workforce attends a training day”.

Leanne is a qualified marketing professional who has recently returned to work after maternity leave and she therefore understands the needs of those returning to work after a break. Leanne continued: “Training with us should lead to career enhancement as we aim to help customers develop the skills and the confidence to get the job or promotion they want. Initially we will ask customers what their ultimate goals are and we will come up with a Pitman Training solution to help them achieve those goals”.

The new centre will be open from 9.30pm to 5.30pm every weekday except Thursdays when it will stay open until 8pm, and the centre will also be open from 9.30am to 12.30pm on Saturdays.
